Roland Young
There are different kinds of encounters.
Some simply pass through our lives.
Some inspire us for a while.
And then there are the rare encounters that continue to live within us for decades.
For me, Roland Young was one of those people.
During the nearly twenty years I spent in Los Angeles, I met many remarkable individuals. Yet if I were asked whose presence remains most vivid in my memory today, it might well be Roland.
He was the art director behind many iconic album covers at A&M Records, including those of The Carpenters, and for many years he taught at ArtCenter College of Design.
But he was never the kind of teacher who filled students with answers.
He gave us questions.
Looking back, I realize that “mentor” describes him far better than “teacher.”
One assignment, for example, was astonishingly simple:
“Express SWEET.”
The brief was deceptively straightforward, yet it contained an abyss of complexity.
What is sweetness?
Is it a taste?
An emotion?
Or perhaps a memory?
Roland never offered an answer.
Dig deeper.
Question more.
Go beyond your first idea.
And then he would say something I have never forgotten:
“Never lie to yourself for the sake of expression.”
His voice was calm, but his words cut like a blade.
“If that’s what it takes,” he once said, “don’t be afraid to bare your own ass. Give everything you’ve got.”
He meant it literally and metaphorically.
Embarrassment, appearances, even the small pride that tries to protect us—none of these have any place in genuine expression.
He spoke those words without hesitation, even acting them out with his gestures.
Those classes were not always comfortable.
At times they were painful.
There was a constant fear of having my own sensitivity tested.
But looking back, I now understand that true learning exists precisely in that uncomfortable place.
The answers we are given become knowledge.
The answers we discover ourselves become part of who we are.
Even now, decades later, whenever I begin creating something, I still hear Roland’s voice.
Is this really true?
Are you being honest with yourself?
A great mentor is not someone who gives you knowledge.
A great mentor quietly places into your hands the questions you have not yet discovered within yourself.
What Roland Young left me was not the technique of design.
He left me a way of seeing the world.
And that way of seeing still lives quietly within me today.
