Pride and Arrogance
Many years ago, someone who profoundly changed my life once said something I never expected to hear.
“Mr. Ono, you’re arrogant.”
For a moment, I thought I had misheard.
Arrogant.
Who would say such a thing directly to another person?
Wasn’t it rude?
That was my first reaction.
Yet at the same time, I thought that if those words had come from this particular person, perhaps there really was something within me that I had failed to see.
From that day on, I began thinking seriously about arrogance.
When I listened to others.
When I observed the way people behaved.
And most of all, when I looked at myself.
Something curious began to happen.
Little by little, I started seeing things that had always been there but had remained invisible.
Every human being wants to believe they are right.
We all want to be acknowledged.
We all want to be valued a little more highly.
Those quiet desires often reveal themselves in our words and in our attitudes before we even realize it.
I was certainly no exception.
In fact, perhaps arrogance hides itself most effectively when we are convinced we are free from it.
As I continued reflecting, I also found myself thinking about the difference between pride and arrogance.
This is not a strict definition.
But today, I see it this way:
Pride is seeing yourself as higher.
Arrogance is seeing others as lower.
Pride exists, in one form or another, within all of us.
After all, it stands very close to self-confidence and healthy self-respect.
But when it grows beyond its proper place, we begin to believe we are somehow exceptional.
And before long, we begin looking down on others.
That is the moment when pride quietly becomes arrogance.
To me, that is where the real danger lies.
Because the moment we begin looking down on others, we stop learning.
I already know.
I am right.
I am different.
The moment those thoughts settle into our minds, growth quietly comes to an end.
Some time later, I asked that person a question.
“Why did you tell me I was arrogant?”
The answer was remarkably clear.
“Because I wanted you to grow. I chose those words deliberately.”
I was deeply moved.
That single sentence had continued living within me long after it was spoken.
Even today, I cannot honestly say that I have become free from pride or arrogance.
I only hope that I never forget they still have the potential to exist within me.
