My Background— A Journey Through Design to Understand Humanity

I was born in Tokyo in 1948. In 1971, I moved to Los Angeles to study at ArtCenter College of Design. I did not yet know what I was searching for. I only knew that I wanted to understand what truly moves the human heart.

As I immersed myself in typography, color, form, and photography, I discovered a simple but profound truth: letters are pictures. They are not merely carriers of information—they also carry emotion.

After graduating, I joined the studio of photographer Norman Seeff, where I witnessed the creation of portraits of musicians, actors, and many remarkable individuals. What I learned there was that photography is not about capturing a person’s face. It is about capturing the moment when a person opens their heart. That realization became the foundation of my approach to design.

In 1976, I began creating nail art in Beverly Hills. I saw the tiny surface of a fingernail as a canvas. It taught me that the scale of an expression has little to do with the depth of the emotion it can evoke.

Later, in Hollywood, I worked on film posters, record album covers, and fashion advertising. Through projects involving filmmakers such as Francis Ford Coppola and Michael Mann, I came to understand that creativity is driven not by technique, but by imagination—the ability to give form to something that does not yet exist.

In 1985, I founded Taki Ono Studio in Tokyo. Since then, I have collaborated with brands including L’Oréal Paris, Maybelline New York, and SK-II, helping shape identities for companies across a wide range of industries.

Yet throughout all those years, the question I kept returning to never changed.

What is a brand?

The answer was never found in a logo or an advertisement. It was always found in the people behind them.

Every company has a personality. Every brand reflects a way of seeing the world. I have come to believe that design is the act of translating invisible values, intentions, and human qualities into forms that people can genuinely feel.

For many years, I believed I was simply practicing design.

Looking back, I realize that what I truly wanted to understand was humanity itself.

In recent years, I have begun expressing that same search through writing.

The subjects may change, but the question has always remained the same.

Why are we moved?

And where does the meaning of life begin?

Pride and Arrogance>

Tahiti>

The Memory of Shigeo Nagashima>
