Who Am I?
Who am I?
At least once in life, people turn this question toward themselves.
Yet when we try to answer it honestly, we often find ourselves at a loss for words.
Many people speak of their titles or professions.
Or they speak of their achievements, their age, or their position.
But sometimes I wonder.
If I were to lose my job, would I disappear?
Do I become a different person each time I grow older?
That cannot be true.
Those things are merely labels attached to a life, not the person themselves.
So then, who am I?
I have thought about this for a long time.
And the answer I arrived at was surprisingly simple.
I am a being in the process of becoming.
I am not a completed person.
Even now, I am still unfinished.
That is why I hesitate.
That is why I waver.
That is why I make mistakes.
But now, I believe that is perfectly fine.
If we were complete from the beginning, there would be nothing to learn.
No need to be hurt, no need to feel ashamed, no need to cry.
Life, I think, is the time during which we carry such imperfections,
and yet gradually deepen ourselves.
Suffering and failure,
encounters and farewells,
all of it has been for that purpose.
More deeply.
More quietly.
More transparently.
Not to be recognized by others.
But simply to make the existence that is myself a little clearer, a little purer.
That is all.
And if, beyond that, I can become someone who is of even a little help to others, that is enough.
Being useful itself is not the ultimate goal.
So who am I?
I am someone who is not yet complete.
And I will likely never be complete.
But that is perfectly fine.
To be imperfect means there is still room to grow.
Even today, I continue to nurture the being that is myself.
And that alone, I believe, is enough.
