What Is Beauty?

What is beauty?

Since I was young, I have been deeply moved by beautiful things.

Paintings. Music. Architecture. Nature.

The way people live their lives.

Why do some things make my heart tremble,

while others leave me untouched?

Will I find beautiful tomorrow what I find beautiful today?

Or does beauty change with the condition of my heart?

On days when I am tired.

On days when I am joyful.

On days when I am sad.

Does beauty itself change?

I sometimes find myself wondering.

And yet, when I look back on my life, one thing feels undeniably true.

Beauty is not something created by my own circumstances.

Beauty simply exists—

as the quiet light that radiates from existence itself.

Perhaps the real question is whether I am capable of perceiving that light.

There are moments when only one word comes to mind:

“Wow!”

Explanation does not come first.

Wonder does.

Beauty reaches the heart before it reaches the mind.

I have always loved music, and I often attend classical concerts.

Sometimes a performance I eagerly anticipated leaves me untouched.

At other times, a piece I hear by chance stirs something deep within me.

Recently, I had one of those unexpected encounters.

It was I Wish You Love, performed by the easy-listening maestro Ronnie Aldrich.

The moment I heard a single phrase, I was enveloped in a beauty so tender that it seemed to melt my heart.

For days afterward, I found myself replaying that passage again and again.

Why did it move me so profoundly?

One day, I came across the same recording in an Italian social media post, accompanied by nostalgic images of the Amalfi Coast.

At that instant, time disappeared.

The atmosphere of the 1960s.

Perhaps a department store.

Or a supermarket.

An elevator.

An ordinary day during my years in America.

I cannot remember the place.

I cannot remember the event.

Yet somehow, the feeling of those days returned with extraordinary clarity.

Perhaps I had been living through a remarkably happy season of life.

The music quietly awakened that forgotten memory.

Beauty is the light that emanates from existence itself.

As long as our hearts can still tremble before that light,

perhaps we can continue to love life itself.

Pride and Arrogance>

Tahiti>

The Memory of Shigeo Nagashima>
