Georges Prêtre>

Georges Prêtre
When I was a university student, I once went into an old record shop in Jimbocho, looking for a recording of Carmen.
The owner was the sort of man I could never quite tell was kind or intimidating. He was talking with what seemed to be a regular customer about a newly released recording of Carmen.
It was the complete recording with Maria Callas, conducted by Georges Prêtre.
They were both praising it enthusiastically.
At the time, I had been interested in Karajan’s Carmen. But when their conversation turned to Karajan, they did not seem particularly impressed.
Young and easily influenced, I took their opinion completely to heart and ended up leaving the shop without buying the Karajan recording.
Looking back, I was a remarkably impressionable customer.
That was when I first became conscious of Georges Prêtre as a conductor.
Later, I listened to his Carmen with Callas. I thought it was wonderful, certainly, but at the time it meant little more to me than that.
And then several decades passed.
Vienna, 2010.
My friend, the violinist Birgit Kolar, invited my wife and me to the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert as a wedding gift. It was a concert I had long dreamed of attending.
When I saw the conductor’s name, I was surprised.
Georges Prêtre.
For a moment, that little record shop in Jimbocho came back to me.
When we entered the Musikverein, our seats were in the fourth row, directly facing the orchestra. We could see every expression on the conductor’s face.
Sitting in such extraordinary seats, about to hear the Vienna Philharmonic, I remember thinking that it hardly mattered who was conducting.
But the moment the music began, that thought disappeared.
Prêtre’s music was extraordinarily rich in color.
Elegant, yet full of life.
Light, but never slight.
Brilliant, yet always refined.
And above all, free.
There was something magnificent about the way he carried himself, and then there were those wonderfully playful expressions that appeared from time to time.
He was eighty-five.
Watching him, I found myself thinking,
“I hope I can grow old like that.”
The sound of the Vienna Philharmonic was unforgettable as well.
Soft, supple, and mellow—almost as though cream had been dissolved into the sound—it filled the entire hall.
I felt almost intoxicated by it.
A name I had happened to overhear in a little record shop in Jimbocho.
And now, decades later, that same man was standing before me in Vienna.
That day, Prêtre gave me more than words could ever express.
His joyful expression and the music remain with me still.
Life sometimes gives us the pleasure of encountering someone anew, many years after we first came across them.
