What Is Desire?

Desire is not evil.

Yet many people fear it or try to keep their distance from it.

Desire is something impure.

Something immature.

Something to be suppressed.

Is it because this is what we have been taught?

But is it really so?

Desire is the energy of life.

To know.

To love.

To be recognized.

To create.

To go beyond.

Desire lives in all of these.

Without desire, we would not move forward.

There would be no civilization.

No art.

Not even a declaration of love.

The problem is not desire itself.

It is being consumed by it.

To have desires and to be enslaved by them are two different things.

Sometimes I wonder whether desire and the sacred might be two sides of the same coin.

There is a mysterious allure to the sacred.

Even as we stand in awe of it, we are drawn toward it.

Something so vast.

Something so beautiful.

Something so close to truth.

Fascination and awe exist there together.

Desire is much the same.

We are drawn to desire.

Success, power, fame, love, creation.

All have a powerful allure.

Yet desire also has a frightening capacity to rule us, consume us, and sometimes lead us to ruin.

That is why desire is fire.

Fire keeps us warm.

But if we mishandle it, it can burn us to ashes.

I find myself thinking:

What is sacred fills us with awe,

yet draws us in.

And what is filled with desire

draws us in at first,

yet holds something fearsome within.

What Moves Us?

Inside

What is Hope?
