Letters Begin to Speak>
Letters Begin to Speak
What are letters?
By looking deeply at letterforms, I came to discover the beauty and light that lie beyond their shapes. The joy of doing so not only enriched my understanding of design, but also nurtured the way I see people and the world.
Most people regard letters as symbols used to convey language. That is, of course, one of their essential functions. But to me, a letter is also a picture in its own right.
I learned this in a typography class in Los Angeles.
At the time, photocopiers were not yet part of everyday life. To understand and design the letterforms we were given, we had to draw them precisely, one by one, in pencil on sheets of gridded paper.
What began simply as an assignment eventually became an invaluable education.
Every curve has a reason.
Every straight line has a reason.
As I continued drawing them over and over again, I gradually began to see that each letter possessed its own structure, its own center of gravity, and its own expression.
I did not merely learn the letters.
I was taught how to see them.
That experience eventually shaped the way I came to see not only typography, but design as a whole.
The finest design I encountered in Los Angeles seemed to possess a radiance and a smile.
Of course, it did not literally shine or smile at me. Yet there were works that, the moment I opened the page, made me want to exclaim:
“Wow.”
The type, the space, the photography, the color, the composition—everything came together so naturally that the entire image seemed to shimmer with a quiet brilliance. It was filled with a positive energy that stirred the heart.
“This is incredible.”
“How did they do this?”
As a student, all I could do was marvel.
“Someday, I want to create design like this.”
That longing was not simply a desire to master technique. It was a wish to come even a little closer to that moment—to evoke a sense of “wow” before anything could be put into words.
Letters are not merely meant to be read.
When we look at them deeply, they begin to speak.
Even now, whenever I encounter beautiful design, I find myself searching for that same radiance, that same expression of joy.
Letters did not simply teach me about design.
They taught me how to see—and how to be moved.
