What is Silence>

What is Silence

Silence is not the absence of words.

It is a place beyond words.

We speak because it reassures us.

We explain.

We insist.

We defend ourselves.

We try to prove who we are.

Yet the deepest realities of life cannot truly be spoken.

Love.

Loss.

Prayer.

Awe.

The moment we try to put them into words, something essential begins to fade.

Silence, then, is not emptiness.

It is the most densely inhabited moment of all.

One day, I came across a remark by the contemporary Japanese composer Susumu Yoshida:

“Music is not sound. It is silence.”

Those words stayed with me.

So I listened carefully to one of his compositions.

There was a long silence.

No sound.

At first, I tried to understand it.

What was he expressing?

What was I supposed to feel?

But after a while, I stopped trying to think.

I stopped searching for meaning.

I simply surrendered myself to the silence.

Then something unexpected happened.

My mind gradually became still.

The part of me that wanted to understand…

The part of me that wanted to interpret…

Slowly disappeared.

Only a quiet space remained.

It felt as though I were drifting gently through a place where nothing existed.

Yet that time was not empty.

Paradoxically, it felt completely full—

precisely because there was nothing there.

Then, almost imperceptibly, a single note emerged.

Because it arose from silence, that one note resonated within me with astonishing depth.

If this is true of music,

perhaps it is also true of life.

Life is not made only of the moments when we speak.

There are also moments when we stop,

seek nothing,

resist nothing,

and quietly surrender ourselves to stillness.

Silence is not an escape.

It is a process of ripening.

Silence is not the time when we stop thinking.

Flute Echoing Through the Misty Forest>

What is Hope?>

What Is God?>
