Who Am I?

Who am I?

At least once in our lives, we all ask ourselves this question.

Yet when we try to answer it seriously, words fail us.

Most people speak of their titles.

They speak of their professions, achievements, and age.

But if I lose my work, do I cease to exist?

Do I become someone else each time I grow older?

Surely not.

These are merely labels attached to a life.

They are not the person themselves.

Then who am I?

After thinking about it for many years, I arrived at a simple answer.

I am a being in the process of becoming.

I am not a finished human being.

I am still on the way.

That is why I become lost.

That is why I waver.

That is why I make mistakes.

And I believe that is all right.

If we were complete from the beginning, there would be nothing to learn.

No need to be hurt, to be humbled, or to shed tears.

Life is the time we are given to grow deeper, little by little, while remaining incomplete.

The suffering and the failures,

the encounters and the farewells—

all of them were part of that becoming.

Deeper.

Quieter.

More transparent.

Not to gain the approval of others.

I simply want to make the being that I am a little clearer, a little purer.

That is all.

And if, somewhere along the way, I can be of some help to another person, that will be enough.

But being useful is not the purpose.

Who am I?

A human being who is not yet complete.

And perhaps I never will be.

I am at peace with that.

To be incomplete means that there is still room to grow.

And so, for a little while longer,

I would like to continue living

with this question beside me.

Flute Echoing Through the Misty Forest>

What is Hope?>

What Is God?>
