What Is Beauty?>
What Is Beauty?
What is beauty?
I have always been deeply moved by beautiful things.
Painting, music, architecture, nature.
The way a person lives.
Why does one thing make my heart tremble,
while another leaves me completely untouched?
Will something I find beautiful today
still seem just as beautiful tomorrow?
Does beauty change according to the state of my heart?
On a day when I am tired.
On a day when I am happy.
On a day when I am sad.
Does beauty itself change with me?
And yet, looking back, there is one thing I have come to believe.
Beauty is not something created for my convenience.
Beauty must always be there, as a quiet light radiating from existence itself.
Perhaps what is really being asked is whether I am still able to perceive that light.
“Wow!!!” There is that instant.
Before thought has time to intervene,
the feeling arrives.
I love music and often go to classical concerts.
Sometimes I hear a performance I have been looking forward to and feel nothing.
At other times, a piece I happen to hear unexpectedly moves me deeply.
Recently, I had just such an encounter.
To my surprise, it was “I Wish You Love” by Ronnie Aldrich, the royal maestro of easy listening.
I heard only the first minute and a half or so, and my heart simply melted.
After that, I found myself listening to that same passage over and over again, almost every day.
Why was I so drawn to it?
The music had appeared unexpectedly on an Italian person’s social media, accompanied by nostalgic images of the Amalfi Coast.
The moment I heard it, my sense of time seemed to disappear.
The atmosphere of the 1960s.
Was it somewhere in a department store or a coffee shop in Japan during the 1960s Showa era?
Perhaps inside an elevator?
Or was it simply some ordinary moment from my life in America?
I cannot remember the place.
I cannot remember what happened.
And yet, the atmosphere I had felt in those days suddenly came alive again, somewhere deep inside me.
I must have been living through a wonderfully happy and fulfilling time in my life.
The music had quietly awakened a memory filled with beauty.
