Giving Up and Letting Go

Throughout my life, I have found myself confronting the idea of giving up many times.

When I was young, I believed that giving up meant losing.

Losing a dream.

Abandoning a challenge.

Surrendering hope.

And so, I lived with the determination that I would never give up.

But as I grew older, I began to wonder what it truly means to let go—and how it differs from giving up.

Giving up and letting go are not the same.

When we give up, a sense of regret remains somewhere in the heart.

“I really wanted it.”

“I truly wanted that dream to come true.”

We move on while still carrying such feelings within us.

Letting go, however, is a little different.

One day, we quietly realize:

“I have had enough.”

Strangely enough, I experienced this feeling when I stopped smoking.

I had smoked for nearly twenty years, until I was around forty.

It was not something I could simply quit by deciding to quit.

Nor did I force myself to endure the craving.

One day, I said to myself:

“You have smoked more than enough. You have enjoyed it fully. Surely there is nothing left to regret.”

And then, strangely, from that very day, cigarettes disappeared completely from my life.

That was when I understood.

What I had let go of was not the cigarettes themselves.

It was my attachment to them.

People do not truly change through endurance alone.

I believe real change occurs when attachment quietly comes to an end.

There are things in life that seem impossible to release.

Dreams.

Success.

Youth.

Relationships.

The past.

No matter how forcefully we try to cast them aside, the heart does not follow.

But when their role in our lives has come to an end, we naturally become able to say:

“I have had enough.”

Letting go is not losing something.

It is quietly beginning to walk toward what comes next.

What is Hope?>

What Is God?>
