The Memory of Shigeo Nagashima

Memory is a mysterious thing.

Even when an event belongs to the distant past, a single moment can remain untouched by time, as vivid as if it had happened yesterday.

For me, one of those moments is Shigeo Nagashima.

When I was in elementary school, I was watching a Tokyo Big6 baseball game at a friend’s house. Nagashima stepped up to the plate at Jingu Stadium and hit a ball that soared high into the sky before disappearing into the stands.

I was a baseball-loving boy, and I knew just how extraordinary that home run was. In those days, hitting a home run in university baseball was an exceptionally rare achievement.

Even as a child, I was overwhelmed.

“A player like this actually exists?”

I remember staring at the television in complete amazement.

But there is another memory that has stayed with me.

It was the spring of 1958 at Korakuen Stadium.

I was sitting close enough to see the Giants’ bench just a few meters away.

Nagashima had only recently graduated from university and was beginning his professional career. As he emerged from the dugout, he was laughing and chatting with his teammates.

That was all.

And yet, for some reason, I could not take my eyes off him.

The faint shadow of a freshly shaved beard.

His lean, athletic body.

And above all, the vibrant energy and radiant smile that seemed to overflow from his entire presence.

He was not yet a legend.

He was simply a young man.

But even then, there was something about him that drew people in.

Looking back, I realize that I was not really watching baseball.

I was watching the presence of Shigeo Nagashima.

That is why, after so many decades, I remember neither the exact path of the home run nor the outcome of the game as vividly as I remember the young man who strode confidently from the bench.

We do not remember people only for what they achieved.

We remember the atmosphere they carried.

And somewhere within me, the Shigeo Nagashima of that spring day is still alive.

What is Hope?>

What Is God?>
